Florida Hikes Minimum Wage for 2017

A lot of politics abound over the increase of state minimum wages in the U.S. with proponents arguing that for life to improve it needs to be increased to $15 per hour, while those against cite potential impact of higher labor costs on businesses. The arguments aside, Florida joins other states with increased minimum wages, which is $8.10 for non-tipped worker and $5.08 for tipped employees

The new Florida labor law poster has been updated in line with the state and federal rate of inflation. Inflation is majorly influenced by two factors; retail price index (RPI) and consumer price index (CPI), which is described as the weighted mean of prices of key goods and services.

The latter is a primary consideration in the calculation of both state and federal rates of inflation. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, the most recent federal rate of inflation is 1.6%.  Put simply, it is the average of the percentage price increase of a basket containing these utilities.

The Attorney General is mandated by the state to enforce the minimum wage laws. The new Florida Labor Law Poster also holds in it workers’ rights, which include:

  1. Right to inform any person of his/her potential rights under Article 24 of the constitution.
  2. Right to inform any person about an employer’s apparent non-compliance with the same.
  3. Right to file a complaint about an employer’s alleged non-compliance with the new rates.

The state law provisions in the new Florida labor law poster states that an employer found liable for purposely violating minimum wage requirements will be liable for a punishment of paying $1,000 fine per violation.

Texas employers are required to display a copy of specific state and federal labor laws at conspicuous places in the workplace.  The Florida All-in-One Complete Poster package meets all state and federal posting requirements and contains the new minimum wage provisions.
