City of Los Angeles Changes to Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave Laws

On July 1, 2017 the City of Los Angeles takes another step forward in reaching its goal of a $15.00/hour minimum wage for all employees.  It also takes a monumental step to ensure that every employee is covered by Paid Sick Leave.

Minimum Wage

When the $15.00 per hour minimum wage was approved, it was established based upon a phased-in approach.  On July 1, 2016, it began the bridge by increasing the minimum wage to $10.50 per hour for all employers with 26 or more employees.  Employers with less than 26 employees were exempt from the minimum wage increase at that time.  Beginning July 1, 2017, however, employers with 26 or more employees will be subject to a $12.00 minimum wage while employers with less than 26 employees will now be subject to a $10.50 minimum wage. Employers with 26 or more employees will reach its $15.00/hour goal by July 1, 2020 and employers with less than 26 employees will reach their goal by July 1, 2021.

Paid Sick Leave

On July 1, 2016, all employers in the City of Los Angeles with 26 or more employees were subject to providing Paid Sick Leave to workers.  Just as with the minimum wage increase, employers with less than 26 employees were exempt during the first year to allow for adequate time and preparation.  Beginning July 1, 2017, all employers in the City of Los Angeles must provide Paid Sick Leave to employees who work at least 2 hours per week and have worked at their current employer for at least 30 days.

Posting Requirement

All businesses within the City of Los Angeles must display the new July 1, 2017 Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave Notice.

In addition, complete compliance requires that all businesses display specific state and federal labor compliance laws, all of which are available on the California All-in-One-Poster.

The Labor Law Center offers a worry-free service to our customers through our Poster Service Plan with automatic replacements.  What this means is that we monitor the state and federal postings and automatically send you updates when they are released.  It is that simple!

We also offer our clients our newly updated Education Center.  If you are new to labor law compliance or just wanting to keep up with the latest news and changes as they come out, this is the place to bookmark and visit regularly.
