Maryland’s New Healthy Working Families Act effective February 11, 2018

After significant discussion within the state, Maryland has moved forward with the 2018 Healthy Working Families Act.  The act went into effect on February 11, 2018.

Employers with 15 or more employees who do not offer at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, must comply with the law and begin accruing and offering time to workers.  For businesses that already offer this level of sick leave or greater, no additional action needs to be taken.  Employers with less than 15 employees must allow unpaid sick and safe leave.

The maximum an employee may accrue in a year is 40 hours.

Companies should begin accruing time for employees effective February 11,. 2018.  Employees must be provided notification of the law and their rights as provided the the act.  A new labor poster has been prepared to meet all notification requirements of the state.
