Owning a hair salon, tanning salon, spa, or health retreat can be a rewarding way to help people look and feel their best. But in addition to your work with your clients, you also have a lot to consider as a business owner. One of those things is making sure that your health or beauty care business is operating in compliance with all of the Department of Labor’s requirements.

In addition to following labor laws, you must post labor law posters in all of your salons and other health and beauty care facilities. These must be placed in areas where your employees will see them clearly and often. If you do not make these posters available to your employees, you could face some very hefty fines.

Required Labor Law Posters

Labor law posters are required by both the state and federal government. The posters that you will have to display for any business include:

  • Job Safety and Health Protection
  • Equal Employment Opportunity poster
  • Notice to Workers with Disabilities Paid at Special Minimum Wages
  • Family and Medical Leave Act Poster
  • Federal Minimum Wage
  • Employee Polygraph Protection Act
  • Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act
  • Occupational Safety and Heath Act

For your health or beauty salon, you may also need to post these items:

  • HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practices
  • HIPAA Employee Information Notice

Your state may also require other posters, which you can find by going to the state’s Department of Labor website and following the links to labor law posters.

Procuring Posters

There are two ways you can get the labor law posters you need for your health or beauty care facility.

The first is to print the posters for free from the Department of Labor website. These posters must be printed at the proper size, usually 8.5 by 11 inches, and you will have to keep up with any changes to the laws yourself so that you can be sure you are always displaying the most current labor laws.

The second is to purchase your labor law posters. In addition to getting the posters in the right size and in nicely laminated format, you can purchase service upgrades that will ensure that you get an automatic shipment of updated labor law posters any time there are changes made to the laws.

Displaying Posters

The Department of Labor requires that you place these posters in a place where all your employees will see them regularly and clearly. They must be of the proper size as indicated by each individual poster, and they must be up to date. If you employ workers in your beauty care facility who do not speak English as their first language, you are encouraged to purchase translated labor law posters to ensure that all your employees have access to this information.

Once you’ve gotten your labor law posters hung up, you can get back to what you do best—taking care of your business.
