What is Equal Pay Day?

Equal Pay Day is the symbolic day dedicated to raising awareness of the gender pay gap.  It’s typically held in April, and the date changes every year. It was started by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996, with the hopes that by raising awareness of pay discrepancy, all people, no matter their gender, will get paid equally.

Though many strides have been made, there is still a significant earnings gap between men and women, and is even more significant for African-American and Hispanic women.

Federal Laws  

There are 5 federal laws that address equal pay and compensation including the Equal Pay Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, Executive Order 11246, and National Labor Relations Act. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with these laws. Information is available on government websites including this interactive map from the US Department of Labor.
