Michigan is one of several states that will increase the state minimum wage on January 1, 2017. The state has approved for a 40 cent an hour increase to the general minimum wage in 2017, followed by an additional 35 cent per hour increase in 2018, bringing the rates to $8.90 in 2017 and $9.25 in 2018.
In addition, the Michigan tipped minimum wage will increase 15 cents in 2017 raising the rate from $3.23 currently to $3.38. The tipped rate will increase to $3.52 in 2018. Tipped minimum wage is set at a rate of 38% of the standard state minimum wage.
The minimum wage for minors, age 16-17, will increase 32 cents in 2017, taking the new rate to $7.57 in 2017 and $7.68 in 2018. Minimum wage for minors is set at 85% of the standard state minimum wage rate. In addition, employees age 16 – 19 may be paid a training wage for the first 90 days of employment. The 2017 training wage for Michigan is $4.25.
Minimum wage in Michigan covers all companies with two or more employees and also applies to all employees age 16 and over.
