District of Columbia Minimum Wage Rates.

While there is no increase in District of Columbia ’s minimum wage rate to be seen at this time, I thought I should talk about their minimum wage and their laws which govern it. Currently District of Columbia ’s minimum wage is $7.00 an hour.

All privately employed persons shall be paid $7.00 an hour according to District of Columbia ’s minimum wage law. However, there are a few exceptions, mostly involving District of Columbia ’s acknowledgement and yielding to federal laws regulating labor and pay for certain groups of people.

For example a provision which allows adult learners who are newly hired to a company to be paid the federal minimum wage for no more than 90 days. ($5.15) This also applies to students who work for institutions of higher learning, but can be paid the federal minimum wage indefinitely.

Another major exception to District of Columbia ’s minimum wage of $7.00 an hour, is for those employees who are under the age of eighteen. The law allows them to work for the federal minimum wage rate as well.

Handicapped employees may also be paid a special rate if the employer has a certificate from District of Columbia ’s Dept. of Labor.

Other workers, like the aged, will be paid according the particular act that regulate their special employment considerations. (Older Americans Act. OAA)

Various other exemptions exist, but it is basically for those in sales positions such as door-to-door salesmen and other salaried workers such as newspaper distributors. All of the details of the wage an hour laws can be found on the District of Columbia Complete Labor Law poster.
