Which Labor Law Posters Do I Need for Remote Contracted Employees?

February 15, 2016

While having on-site employees makes it easy to comply with federal and state requirements in regard to labor posters, there are quite a few businesses that now utilize remote workers. These workers are paid and employed by the business just as on-site workers, but since they do not visit the facility, the issue of labor law posters is one that has to be addressed.

Employer Obligations

It is required that an employer ensures that each employee, regardless of where they are working from, is informed of their rights. There are a few options for at-home workers, which include:

If the home-based worker will be checking in at any location, or the business’s main office on a regular basis, then having the posters displayed there will usually meet the employer obligations.

Poster Updates

It is also essential for employers to send their remote workers notifications updates when changes are made. This may require the employer to send out new posters, or to simply notify the employees that the changes have occurred. It may be considered a violation if the employee does not receive this notification.

Construction Sites and Traveling Employees

If you have employees that report to a construction site, then the posters need to be visible here. In this situation it would also beneficial to utilize electronic posters on the company’s intranet; however, when it is in regard to a construction site, physical posters also need to be displayed.

Traveling workers should have access to the posters at the main office. Also, if the worker does not check in to a physical location, then paper copies should be sent to them.

Adhering to all labor law poster requirements is a must, or employers should expect to be hit with hefty fines.
