Your Laundromat, dry cleaning service, or tailoring shop requires a lot of hard work to run properly. In addition to keeping your customers happy, you also have to ensure that your employees are hired and maintained legally. One thing that you must do after hiring employees is to display the proper labor law posters.

Labor law posters are displays that inform employees of their rights under the laws that protect them. These posters are required by both the federal government and the state government, and cover a wide variety of laws and regulations. A laundry or dry cleaning service must post the same state and federal labor law posters as most other businesses.

State Posters

All states have slightly different labor laws, therefore your labor law posters will be unique to your state. Every state requires a posting about the state version of Occupational Safety and Health Act. If your state does not have their own version of this act, then you must post the federal version which covers any state without an OSHA-approved state plan.

Other posters that you may find are required by your state include information on state-specific child labor laws, information on worker’s compensation or unemployment insurance laws, and information on specific labor laws such as smoking policies that apply only to your state.

Federal Posters

Federal labor law posters make up the bulk of your display. They include information on the Family Medical and Leave Act, which tells your employees that they have rights to job retention during times of serious illness or pregnancy; the Employee Polygraph Protection Act, which explains to your employees their right to choose to decline a polygraph at any time before, during, or after their employment; the Federal Minimum Wage, which may be higher or lower than your state minimum wage; Equal Employment Opportunity, which assures your employees that hiring and firing is done solely on the basis of job-related criteria; Job Safety and Health, which backs up the information found on the OSHA poster; and finally, the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, which tells any of your employees who are military personnel that they have a right to be employed even during deployment or drills.

Federal contractors, such as facilities that are paid by the government to provide laundry and tailoring services to military or other government agencies, have special labor law posters that they must display, including information on the NLRA, the Walsh-Healy Public Contracts Act, the Right to Work, and the eVerify system if you choose to use that in your business practices.

Staying compliant with the laws of the Department of Labor helps you avoid large fines and other problematic legal issues that arise when the labor law posters were not displayed in an area for your workers to see. You need to be sure that all of your Laundromats or other dry cleaning service locations have these posters in places where your employees will see them frequently and clearly.
