Running a hotel is a complicated endeavor that takes a very organized mind. Whether you have a 5-star luxury hotel, an extended stay motel, a bed and breakfast, or a cabin getaway, you will need to do some research to be sure that you are running everything legally. One of the things that is required by law if you have any employees is to post labor law posters in a place where they can see them.
Labor law posters are required for every business that has employees, and are broken down by state and federal requirements. Every state requires slightly different types of labor law posters, so you will need to go to your state’s Department of Labor website to discover which posters are required for your hotel.
Basic Federal Posters
The basic federal labor law posters that are required for every business include information on the following labor laws:
- Family Medical and Leave Act
- Employee Polygraph Protection Act
- Federal Minimum Wage
- Equal Employment Opportunity
- Job Safety and Health
- Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act
These six posters, which can often be purchased as a single display, are the required federal posters for every hotel.
Federal Contracts
If your hotel has a contract with a federal agency, such as a hotel that provides rooms for potential service men and women who are attending mandatory testing before joining the military, you will be required to post special labor law posters. In these cases, your employees are technically considered federal contractors, and so they must be aware of their rights and responsibilities within this role. These posters include information on:
- National Labor Relations Act
- Davis-Bacon Act
- Walsh-Healy Public Contracts Act
- Federal Minimum Wage for Contractors
If you fall into this category, you will need to display labor law posters that include this information as well as the basic federal posters.
Policies
There are a few required policies you will need to keep in mind when you post your labor law posters in your hotel. The posters must be in a place where your employees can openly and frequently see them. This may mean a break room, an employee locker room, or a kitchen. You must ensure that you are displaying the most recent labor laws. If you purchase your posters through a company like Labor Law Center, you can purchase an additional service package so that the company will automatically send you updated posters anytime the laws change.
There is language within the Department of Labor poster requirements that states that you are responsible for ensuring that all your hotel employees understand the information on the posters. This means that if you employee Spanish-speakers, you may need to display your posters in both English and Spanish. Additionally, some states require that you post Spanish versions of the labor law posters if your team is made up of more than a certain percentage of Spanish-speaking employees.
Once you know exactly which posters are required by your state, you can easily purchase your labor law posters, or print free versions from the Department of Labor website, and be well on your way to a legally compliant workplace.
