Mileage Reimbursement Requirements in Virginia (VA)

There are many reasons why you might qualify for compensation on the amount of miles you drive in your own car during work hours. In the State of Virginia, employees who use his or her car for work related travel are entitled to receive reimbursement for gas and even loss or damage to their car during these travels.

If you work in Virginia and use your personal car or vehicle for work, then you are covered under the Virginia Mileage Reimbursement Law. This law is recognized across the United States so that employees do not have to pay out of pocket costs that are incurred during business hours. In many cases, this reimbursement rate should cover all reasonable operating costs and might even over the damages (such as a collision) or theft of the car. You should also be aware that if your car is damaged or stolen while on the clock, if it is found that you were negligent, you employer does not have to reimburse you for those costs.

In any state that covers employees for this compensation, including Virginia, you should always discuss how much you would get for compensation beforehand. Not all employers offer this to their employees and if an agreement cannot be reached between the two parties, the employer will have to pay you the current federal (or IRS) rate. I would recommend reaching an agreement about your compensation before you put a lot of miles on your own personal car or vehicle.

When you live and work in Virginia, and you are required to use your own car for work-related travels, you should find out if your employer will give you compensation for your gas and operating costs. This law is there to help you and if you are covered, you should take advantage of the law.
