Business owners need to realize that it’s more important than ever to send Utah W-2 forms to their employees in a timely manner. All W-2 forms reporting wages for 2006 were due no later than January 31, 2007. In the past, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) was lenient about taxpayers using the W-2 form, and a pay stub was sufficient evidence. Well, not any more!
The IRS is strictly enforcing the policy with employers who fail to provide these forms. It will be a hassle for you to do you taxes without it, as more forms need to be completed to explain the lack of a W-2. Your tax return will probably take much longer to process without your W-2, so if you haven’t received it, make sure you find out why and get a copy ASAP.
It is the federal law that employers in the U.S. to send an accurate W-2 forms to all employees by January 31st. While many employers mail these forms, there are still some who give W-2s directly to employees with the last check in January. However the method, it must be done by the deadline, or you have something to complain about.
If you don’t have your form, make sure your paycheck includes the proper address. Whether it is the correct address or not, you need to let your employer know that you didn’t get it. If you work for a smaller company, it is possible that they mailed it after the deadline. The majority of companies, however, make sure that these forms are out on time. If it got lost in the mail and you inform them you don’t have it, they should send you a replacement.
Larger companies can have just as many problems with getting this payroll responsibility taken care of. The fact of the matter is, with a larger budget, they can afford professional payroll services that take care of that obligation for them. However, these payroll processing firms may not make updating employee addresses their first concern.
