Georgia W-2 Form

If you moved during 2006 and failed to update your mailing address with your employer’s payroll department, it might be time to stop admiring the azaleas and contact your boss instead.

By law, every employer in the state must provide an accurate Georgia W-2 form to every employee no later than January 31, 2007. Unfortunately, many employees move during the year and don’t properly notify their employer of their new mailing address. Employee moves are the most common reason for missing or late W-2 forms.

Your W-2 form is a valuable document that will be needed when you prepare your state and federal income tax returns for 2006. You will need this document from every employer if you had more than one job during the year. Failure to include it with your tax returns will certainly delay processing and may even delay your tax refunds.

Employers are allowed several ways to deliver these documents. The most common methods are by mail, hand delivery, or including them with your last paycheck during the month of January. Either way, you should contact your employer if you haven’t received your 2006 W-2 form by now.

Not so long ago, a missing W-2 wasn’t such a problem but the times – and IRS regulations – have changed. There was a time you could submit a copy of your last paycheck stub for the year instead of the W-2 form and there would be no problems but those days are over. Now the W-2 form itself is required.

Tax season is a time for headaches and frustrations for most of us but the process is much easier when all documents are in place before beginning. It might be a good idea to double check your records for your W-2 and any other documents needed to file along with your tax returns. The flowers will smell so much sweeter once your tax worries are behind you.
