Wisconsin W-2 Form

With temperatures all over the map in the last few days, it’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner – but it’s true!

And with spring comes daffodils, tulips, birds chirping, sunny skies… and taxes! It’s not too early for Wisconsin residents to start thinking about taxes.

According to the Wisconsin Dept. of Labor, every employee in the state should have received a Wisconsin W-2 form by now. By law, employers must provide every employee with a 2007 W-2 form by January 31, 2007. These forms list all income, and deductions including federal and state tax, for the year ending December 31, 2006.

What should you do if you haven’t received your Wisconsin W-2 form by now? First, contact your employer and ask for a duplicate. Usually when a W-2 for is not delivered, its because the employee has moved and their address needs to be updated. Many companies seem to have a problem updating address on their payroll records, even if they have the correct address elsewhere.

What if you’re employer doesn’t respond? In a few cases, an employer will tell you to “take a hike” when you request a W-2. In others, they may claim to have sent several, even though you still haven’t received one. In either case, if you have requested a duplicate W-2 and haven’t received it after 2 weeks, contact the IRS. They will follow up with the employer and make sure you receive the documentation that you need to file your taxes.

The W-2 for is absolutely critical for accuracy in filing your annual income taxes, both federal and state. Before 2004, the IRS would accept a final paycheck stub instead of a W-2 form. Today, your tax form will be rejected without a W-2 attached. Your refund will be delayed, and you’ll have to file two additional forms, called Form 4598 and Form 4852. Prevent all this hassle by getting a copy of your Wisconsin W-2 now.
