San Francisco Minimum Wage for 2015 Increases from $11.05 to $12.25

The San Francisco, CA minimum wage increased to $11.05 on January 1, 2015 and will increase again, on May 1, 2015, to $12.25 per hour.  On November 4, 2014 San Francisco voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition J, to increase the city’s minimum wage above the California state and the federal minimum wage level.

The measure includes a series of increases to the City of San Francisco minimum wage, ultimately reaching $15.00 per hour on July 1, 2018. Thereafter, the city will increase the minimum wage annually on July 1, based on cost of living data from the federal Consumer Price Index.

San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee applauded the coalition of business, labor and nonprofit leaders who came together to pass the law. The Mayor said this measure is especially meaningful to him, since he grew up washing dishes at his family’s restaurant and appreciates how hard minimum wage earners work for their money.

Employers must pay the San Francisco minimum wage for all work performed within the city limits, regardless of the city or state where the company is based. However, the law does cap compensation for seniors in subsidized employment and for workers under the age of 18 at $12.25 in 2018, with subsequent annual increases.
