Louisiana W-2 Form

If you’re an employee in Louisiana and you haven’t received your W-2 for yet, now is the time to ask your employer about it. When you’re completing your tax return it is too late!

Did you know that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires every employer to distribute Louisiana W-2 forms to each employee no later than January 31 of the following year. In the case of this year, the W-2 proving 2006 earnings must be distributed no later than January 31, 2007.

It’s almost tax time again so that means it’s a good time to find your Louisiana W-2 form. We all know we need to file our income tax returns on time, but some of us might not be aware that there is also a deadline for the time we are to receive our W-2 wage statement from our employer or to distribute these W-2s if we are the employer.

According to IRS law, every employee, whether employed full or part time, needs the W-2 form in order to file his or her tax return. The federal copy of the W-2 must be attached to the employee’s tax return. There was a time, before 2004, when a missing W-2 wasn’t such a problem. An employee who did not get a W-2 could just attach the stub from their last paycheck of the year to the tax return in lieu of the actual W-2 but this is no longer the case. Now a missing W-2 requires even more dreaded paperwork.

When an employee doesn’t receive a W-2, there are now two IRS forms that must accompany the tax return. Form 4598 and Form 4852 must be submitted with the employee’s tax return so the IRS can track which employer did not supply the W-2 and why. The IRS uses these forms to crack down on employers who aren’t distributing this information in a timely manner.
