Labor Law Quick Facts:
Effective July 24, 2008, the Utah minimum wage is $6.55 per hour. For those
who earn $4.42 per hour or more in tips, the rate remains unchanged at $2.13
per hour. The Utah minimum wage statute doesn’t specify a dollar amount.
Instead, the Utah Labor Commission adopts the federal rate in an administrative
action. Most Utah workers are entitled to overtime after 40 hours under federal,
not state, law. Employees under 16 are permitted to work only 4 hours on school
days. The Utah Labor Rules permit an employer to deduct shortages, advances
and other items from an employee’s paycheck only with the employee’s
written permission.*
