Massachusetts ( MA ) Labor Law Quick Facts:
The 2008 Massachusetts minimum wage is $8.00 per hour, making it one of the highest in the nation. Employees are entitled to overtime after 40 hours under state law. The minimum wage of $2.63 for tipped employees and $1.60 per hour for agricultural workers is unchanged. The Massachusetts Child Labor Laws require work permits for all employees under the age of 18. Certain businesses including retail stores require a permit from the Department of Labor to open before 1 pm on some holidays, such as Columbus Day and Veteran’s Day.*
