District of Columbia ( DC ) Labor Law Quick Facts:

Effective July 24, 2008 the District of Columbia minimum wage is $7.55 per hour with overtime required after 40 hours. By statute, the D.C. minimum wage must be at least $1.00 per hour more than the federal minimum wage. Employers who receive federal funding are required to pay at least $11.75 per hour under the Living Wage Act. The D.C. Office of Wage-Hour enforces the law requiring fired workers to be paid the next business day. Under the Seats Law, employers are required to provide seats for employees to use when they are not actively engaged in their work.*

The 2012 minimum wage rate for the District of Columbia is $8.25.

  • Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (38 USCA 433(a)) You are mandated by federal law to provide information regarding the rights, benefits and obligation of employees who are governed by the Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.   • Employee Polygraph Protection Act (29 CFR 801.6) Per federal law, employees have specific rights and protections accorded to them under the Employee Polygraph Protection Act. You must inform employees of their rights under the act. Ensure that you post this information in a conspicuous location. Be aware that under 29 CFR 801.42(7) a civil penalty of up to $10,000 may be assessed against you for violating any provision of the Act.
