Philadelphia Violence Leave Rights Poster

Effective since January 5, 2009, employers are required to post the Philadelphia Violence Leave Rights Poster. This poster is designed to inform employees of their right to unpaid leave in the event that they, a family member, or a domestic member are the victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Domestic or sexual abuse may consist of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and more. Individual employers may determine their own payment policies for employees during this leave.

Unpaid Leave Periods

According to a new law pertaining to victims of domestic and/or sexual violence, employers must provide affected employees with up to eight weeks of unpaid leave from work during a 12-month period if they or a qualifying household member have been affected by domestic or sexual abuse. The law applies to all employees in Philadelphia, regardless of how long they have been employed with an employer.

Covered Employers

All employers are covered by the law; however, the amount of time that employees can take away from work varies based on the size of the employer. Employees that work for employers with 50 or more employees can take up to eight weeks off of work during a 12-month period. If an employer has fewer than 50 employees, employees may take up to four weeks off of work during a 12-month period.

Reasons for Leave

Employees are able to take this leave for any of the following reasons;
  • To attend to medical or psychological conditions resulting from the abuse
  • To gain help from an organization that provides services to abuse victims
  • For counseling or therapy needs related to the abuse
  • To relocate or establish other safety plans after the abuse
  • To gain legal assistance

What's Included on the Poster

The Philadelphia Violence Leave Rights Poster informs employees of covered reasons for taking the leave, notice of the leave requirements, and information about the benefits and employment protection employees will be entitled to in the event that they need to take the leave. The poster also contains contact information for enforcement and reporting agencies.

Poster Description

The Philadelphia Violence Leave Rights Poster is fully laminated on the front and back for durability and is printed in full color. Employers should display this poster in an area of the workplace that is easily accessible by all employees, such as an employee break room or public bulletin board.
