Description Employers in the state of Colorado are required to affirm the legal work status of their employees, according to the Colorado Revised Statute 8-2-22. The statute specifically states that employers are required to examine the legal work status of the employee, retain file copies of required documents, ensure that the documents are authentic and not falsified, and that the employer did not knowingly hire an unauthorized alien. This Colorado Affirmation Form contains a checklist so that employers can verify that they are compliant with all of the Statute requirements. Also, in order to complete the Affirmation Form, employers need to verify an employee's identity using approved identification documents. The form should be completed within 20 days after an employer hires a new employee. If the employer is found to have disregarded the terms of the Statute, the employer may be fined up to $5,000 for the first offense and $25,000 for each subsequent offense.
