Labor Law Quick Facts:
Although Alabama has no minimum wage law, most workers are covered under the federal minimum wage, which is $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008. Most employees are entitled to overtime after 40 hours under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. Alabama severely curtails the number of hours a minor can work and requires work permits for everyone under 18. Under the Right to Work law, employees cannot be required to join a union as a condition of employment. Most workers are entitled to up to 12 weeks of job-protected unpaid leave under the federal FMLA.*
